General information about Granada


Granada is the capital of the province Granada in the autonomous region Andalusia in the south of Spain. It has a population of about 245.000 inhabitants living on an area of 12,635 sq km.

Granada is located on an altitude of 662 m above the sea level at the foot of the “Sierra Nevada”, Spain’s highest mountain-massif, where you have the possibility to practice winter-sports and the rest of the year it is a perfect area for hiking and mountaineering. The highest peak has 3478 m and is called the “Mulhacén”. It is slightly higher than the highest point in the city of Granada, the “Alcazaba”, the Arabic castle, at 3366 m.

As Granada is also near to the Mediterranean Sea it is worth to visit in any season. The climate in the province of Granada is characterised by big contrasts because of its big geographical differences but on the whole it is a continental climate. The average temperatures from November to April are 6°C - 13°C and from May to October 25°C - 32°C. Throughout the year there is about 474 litres rainfall, mainly between the months of October to May. During the summer there is practically no precipitation but nice sun throughout June,July and August.
